A whimsical look at the practice of diplomacy, Diplomatic Solution opens with a slow, stately and somewhat pompous introduction - a prelude to a large convocation of diplomats and dignitaries. The main section that follows introduces a spirited march theme and a contrasting idea which are subjected to a variety of contrapuntal "negotiations" before they are affirmatively restated. The coda of the work leads to an abrupt conclusion in an unexpected tonal center, suggesting the ideal diplomatic solution that arrives suddenly, and perhaps independently of the negotiations intended to secure it.
